The Career Disappointers

VII. THE SALTER EGO

A woman gets into a car. Listening to melancholy opera music on RTÉ Lyric fm, she drives down a dead-end lane and crashes into a stone wall. Getting out to survey the damage, she sobs: “Why oh why did they have to put this damned wall HERE? When am I going to get a BREAK??”

DEFINITION: The Salter Ego is named after two things: the the act of rubbing salt into one’s own wounds, and the salty tears which flow as a result of doing this. The Salter Ego enjoys playing the victim. It gets an almost masochistic buzz out of converting experiences into tragic narratives.

DISAPPOINTER MODE: self-pitying narcissism, addiction to painful outcomes, martyr complex, insensitive use of one’s own ‘sensitivity’.

MOTTO: ‘Poor me.’

APPOINTER MODE: emotional sensitivity, openness to the sadness of life and the suffering of others.
