III. THE HALTER EGO
A woman gets into a car. She goes for a quick spin round the local estate. This is where her driving lessons took place fifteen years ago. Since passing her test, she has never taken any other route. Those main roads with all the horrible accidents you hear about? No thanks! Besides, why risk getting lost when you have a route that works just fine?

DEFINITION: The Halter Ego is named after the leather headgear device used to restrain and guide animals, usually workhorses. Accordingly, The Halter Ego never looks at options to the left or right. Instead it is governed by the timid belief that life is a matter of unquestioningly and uncomplainingly ploughing the furrow that has been laid out straight ahead of you. The Halter Ego tells you that you must at all costs play safe in life.
DISAPPOINTER MODE: conservatism, low expectations, extreme risk-aversion.
MOTTO: ‘Aim low, aim low, it’s off to work we go.’
APPOINTER MODE: work ethic, reliability, freedom from glory-glory-hallelujah egotism.
